Upcoming Workshops Hosted by Life in Pixels Photography

Now that the weather is finally improving, workshop season is in full swing for Life in Pixels! Last year our workshops were a huge hit, and because of this we have planned even more fun and exciting opportunities for photography enthusiasts to expand their knowledge and fine tune their photography skills. Our first workshop for 2018 is this Saturday, March 26th, and is an Introductory DSLR Photography workshop. It will take place at Duke Island Park in Bridgewater, starting at 5:30pm. Like always, pre-registration is required due to a limited number of spaces at our workshop. Our intro workshop covers the basics of digital photography, and is a great foundation for anyone thinking about attending our more advanced workshops. Topics covered include the different camera modes, composing a good image, depth of field, and other photography fundamentals. Even if you have been shooting for awhile, this workshop can be a great refresher course. The next workshop on our schedule is June 2nd, and will be held at our studio in Bridgewater. We will be covering off camera lighting and it is sure to be a fascinating class, covering various lighting techniques used in studio portrait photography. No gear is required for this workshop as it will be a hands on class where you will be practicing with our lights and the students will be the subjects of the photographs captured during the ...

Using Model Calls as Continuing Education
Sunday, May 20, 2018
Upcoming Workshops Hosted by Life in Pixels Photography

In the beginning of the year, we attended a workshop where we learned new lighting and posing techniques. This is something we try to do several times every year- pursue continuing education opportunities to advance our photography skills. The last thing we would ever want is for our work to become stagnant, which is why education is imperative in our profession.Something we have started to do though to continue practicing our skills after each workshop is utilizing model calls to test out the new methods we have learned, and to become more comfortable with them in our own studio. Most recently, we practiced new lighting techniques while holding a children's model call. In exchange for their time and participation, we gave each model an 8"x10" print with the corresponding digital file, and in return, we got to practice our new skills. It is truly rewarding to see our skills grow throughout the model call process- all while being able to reward new clients with beautiful portraits of their family. Our goal as a studio is to attend four educational workshops or classes every year, which means you can expect to see four model calls per year from us on average. These are great opportunities to try our studio out, see how we work, and see if we may be a good fit for you. If you are interested in learning more about our model calls, be sure to fill out our contact us page so that ...

Dear Moms, This Post is For You

Upcoming Workshops Hosted by Life in Pixels Photography

Dear moms, this post is for you - for the tired, worn out, scatterbrained women who rarely get the credit they deserve. Being a mom is a full-time job, and many of us work a second job on top of being a mom. We don't get time for ourselves, we don't get time to go to the bathroom, we don't get time to think, we just don't get time - ever. From the moment we decided to become mothers, it became about someone other than ourselves. It became about our children. They became our world. They became our everything. We capture moments of their lives every day- when they're playing on the playground, having a tickle fight with daddy, or finally getting along with their brothers and/or sisters. We capture it all.But what are we left with? We wind up with thousands and thousands of photographs of our children with other members of our family, and we get left behind because more often than not, we're the ones taking the pictures. So moms, please, I'm begging you. Prioritize yourself once in awhile. You don't want to look back on your life in ten years, looking through family albums and wondering why you are absent from all of the photographs. Ask dad to take the photos sometimes, and make it a habit to get a family portrait taken on a yearly basis. Because we all know that these days are fleeting, and they grow so fast. Don't look back on your life regretting what you didn't ...

What Does It Mean To Be a Professional Photographer?
Friday, May 04, 2018
Upcoming Workshops Hosted by Life in Pixels Photography

The term "professional photographer" gets thrown around a lot, but what exactly does it mean? Recently I asked several people what they thought went into being a professional photographer. The answers included things like, "being paid to photograph a subject", "having knowledge of their industry", and "knowing how to take technically solid photographs".Are these answers bad? No. These are all parts of being a professional photographer, but they are only parts. What most people don't take into account are the business logistics that go into being a professional photographer. To be a professional photographer, one must also be a licensed business. This requires registering with your state and/or county. This means paying taxes on your income. This means (hopefully) having insurance in the event of an emergency. There are actual laws in place that professional photographers need to be following if they want to pursue this profession. In America, any individual making money from photography is subject to both state and federal income tax on an annual or quarterly basis. There are also state and local licenses that must be obtained to operate legally in your area. Being able to take a photograph and being a professional photographer are not the same thing. Anyone charging pennies for a photoshoot where the client receives all of the images is likely not abiding by the ...
